The human genome contains approximately 20,000 protein coding genes, but the proteomes of many cells have more than 100,000 different proteins. Explain how this is possible. Find one example of a gene that uses this principle to generate multiple proteins.
Proteome is the entire collection of proteins produced by genome of an organism. The human genome contains approximately 20,000 coding genes but mote than 100,000 different proteins. So, one gene can produce more than one protein.
One such possible mechanism is altenate splicing.
Cacitonin/Calcitonin Gene Related peptide (CGRP) gene
Primary transcript of this gene is alternatively spliced in tissue specific manner and two different products will be formed. They are CGRP- neurotransmitter in neurons and calcitonin- a hormone in thyroid gland.
