Question

what are four differences between ionic and hydrogen bonds

what are four differences between ionic and hydrogen bonds

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Definition

  • Hydrogen bond : Intermolecular interaction between a hydrogen atom and an an electronegative atom
  • Ionic bond : Chemical bond in which metal or non metal ions bind with each other.

Occurrence

  • Hydrogen bond : Between molecules and within the same molecule
  • Ionic bond : In ionic compounds

Strength

  • Hydrogen bond : weaker than ionic bond, so easier to break.
  • Ionic bond : Stronger than hydrogen bond. So more difficult to break.

Charges of atoms

  • Hydrogen bond : Bond formed between partial negative and partial positive atoms
  • Ionic bond : Bond between anions and cations.

Hydrogen and ionic bonds contribute less than hydrophobic interactions to the stability of native, aqueous proteins because- a. They are not as strong by individual bond energy comparison b. They always tend to be buried inside the protein structure and therefore have little effect on the stability c. When these bonds form energy has to be invested d. The functional groups maintaining these bonds can form them as effectively in the random coil structure e. All of the above
