What is the main function of meiosis?
Function of meiosis:
Meiosis is the process in which gametes (sex cells) are produced in sexually reproducing organisms. The main function of meiosis is the reduction of ploidy (number of chromosomes) of the gametes from diploid (2n, two sets of chromosomes) to haploid (n, one set of chromosome). This is most crucial step for reproduction. Because, two haploid gametes will be fused or fertilized to produce the normal embryo. If Diploid gametes fertilized then it will produce the progeny with double number of chromosomes, hat will create abnormal progeny which may lead it to death. So, without meiosis it is not possible to create haploid gametes.
Meiosis also create genetic diversity among the progeny. During the different phases of meiosis, exchange of genetic material (recombination) between the two chromosomes occurred, which creates this genetic diversity among the daughter cell.
