In the UK and Mexico, genetic engineering is not allowed, and any products that contain GMO’s must be labeled. Why do you think the United States has not passed similar laws? (250 words)

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The United States hasn't passed laws making labelling mandatory and the genetic engineering is not banned here like it is in UK and Mexico because of the following reasons:

a.) Pressure from the Food Industry

The food industry claimed that it is a tactic for making their products less popular and eventually drive them out of the market as it has worked in Europe. They have a constant pressure on the government to prevent any such adverse laws.

b.) USFDA statement saying there was no big difference between the GMO and other products

This implies that US government doesn't collectively think of it as a menace or detrimental to the human health and thus any legislation as such is unnecessary.

The current amount of somatic cells (common name “pus”) allowed in 1 cc of cow milk is currently set at 750,000. (Note This is the actual amount currently allowed in the US!) The standard deviation is 67,000 cells. The FDA then tasks you with checking to see if this is...

Through careful genetic engineering, you have produced what you call the Super Tree – a tree that can absorb extraordinary amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2), thereby helping to slow the process of global warming. Past research has shown that a regular tree absorbs 48 pounds of (CO2) per year but you find that in a random sample of 16 of your own Super Trees, the average amount of CO2absorbed is 54.3 pounds with a standard deviation of 18. Using an...
