What is the role of TFIID in eukaryotic transcription? To what DNA sequence does it bind?
During trasncription in eukaryotes, RNA polymerase binds to the transcription initation complex, allowing transcription to occur. To initate transcription in eukaryotes, some trasncription factors are needed. TFIID is the first protein/trasncriptional factor that binds to the TATA binding site (TATA box) in the DNA promotor site to initiate trasncription. TFIID contains a subunit called TBP i.e. TATA binding protein which is general transcription factor that binds specifically to a DNA sequence called the TATA box. This DNA sequence is found about 30 base pairs upstream of the transcription start site in some eukaryotic gene promoters.
