Promoters and enhancers can be categorised as different regulatory elements with different regulatory activities. However, both of them play a very critical role in the field of gene expression. As per research and studies it is found that there is an evolutionary switch between the two regulatory elements. Over the time of evolution, the putative ancestral enhancers become promoters. This evolution leads to the formation of 5' exons. The GC nucleotide sequence and the regulatory motifs play a big role in initiating this evolutionary switch.
