How are adipocytes affected by Spina Bifida
Severe form of spina bifida is called myelomeningocele. Children suffering from it develop excessive fat in their lower limbs. The adipocytes are present in deeper layers of skin in a mess of the collagen fibres. They serve as a fuel tank by storing lipids. Spina bifida causes difficulty in moving. This results in impairment of body and accumulation of fat. Thus, the activity of adipocytes increases. This causes more fat accumulation in lower extremities and leads to obesity as well as other metabolic disorders. In extreme cases, it may form lipomas in lumbosacral region.
