Which of the following could cause a massive mutation?
transposons |
||
substitution |
||
insertion |
||
deletion |
Answer:
(a) transposons
Transposons are genes which can change their position in the chromosomes. That's why they are also called jumping genes. They are flanked with two inverted sequence at both the ends. They often repeat the genome inside a chromosome. However sometimes they cause massive mutations by jumping near very active gene or important gene. Due to their large size and repeating nature they cause massive mutations. Substitution of a base with another causes substitute reaction. Deletion and insertion of base also causes mutation. But these are point mutations affecting only one base pair. No matter how big their impact is, still the mutation is point mutation. Hence transposons can cause massive mutations.
