A female black Labrador retriever is crossed with a blonde Labrador retriever father. The resultant puppies are black, brown, and blonde.

a) What are the genotypes of the mother and the father?

b) If Tyrp1 and Mc1r are unlinked, in a litter of 12 puppies how many of each coloration would you expect to have in this cross? Give their genotypes.

c) In the actual litter you have 6 blonde puppies, 4 black, and 2 brown. What can you conclude about linkage between Tyrp1 and Mc1r?

Answer #1

A. Female black labrador retriever have genotype ( BbEe) and blonde Labrador retriever father (Bbee) produce black (BBEe,BbEe), brown (bbEe) and blonde (bbee, Bbee, BBee) puppies.

B.If Tyrp1 and Mc1r are unlinked. BbEe crossed with bbee and forms 25% BbEe, 25% Bbee, 25% bbEe, 25%bbee. and phenotype is  Black is 25% , Blonde is 50% and Brown is 25%.

C. Blonded puppies=6, Black =4 and Brown=2.

Recombination frequency = 2/12 *100= 16.6% that is mean recombinant frequency is 16.6%. Recombinational frequency is directly praportional to the distance between two gene (Tyrp1 and Mc1r ). and distance between two genes are 16.6 cm.

Simple Dominance with 2 genes A gene in cats causes them to be black (dominant) or brown (recessive). A second gene causes cats to be agouti (have stripes on their hairs) or non-agouti (solid colored hairs).
