Question

state the role of glycogen synthase in glycogenesis

state the role of glycogen synthase in glycogenesis

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Glycogen synthase (UDP-glucose-glycogen glucosyltransferase) is a key enzyme in glycogenesis, the conversion of glucose into glycogen. Glycogen synthase catalyzes the conversion of the glucosyl (Glc) moiety of uridine diphosphate glucose (UDP-Glc) into glucose to be incorporated into glycogen via an α(1→4) glycosidic bond. It catalyses a condensation reaction between UDP-glucose and glycogen (n-residues) to form glycogen (n+1 residues) and UDP, elongating the glycogen polymer. This enzyme is present in liver and muscle cells and aids in catalyzating the production of glycogen,
