Each of the following is true of tumor evolution EXCEPT:

a) Tumor cells are clonal; they originate from a single cell.

b) Tumor cells that have a survival advantage are selected for as the tumor evolves.

c) Chemotherapy can help drive tumor evolution.

d) Once tumor cells have metastasized, they no longer undergo evolution.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

d) Once tumor cells have metastasized, they no longer undergo evolution.

Tumor cells arise from a single cell and proliferate, As the tumor cell population grows traits are selected based on survival advantage and they vary from the cell they originated from. Chemotherapy induces tumor clone evolution leading to the formation of drug resistant tumors.

Tumor cell evolution doesn't stop even after metastasis. New variations are selected as per advantage.
