Toxic substances can change the homeostasis of the bacteria,which in fact can effect their growth and reproducion.For example antibiotics are a kind of toxins to bacteria.For testing the antibiotics ,we should make sure that the antibiotics can increase the generation time of the bacteria.So that we are analysing the generation time and doubling time.A more effective antibiotic is which will create more generation time for the bacteria.Sometimes bacterias will get adapted to the antibiotic which in turn can reduce its generation time and replicate fastly.

Biofilm is a collective of one or more organism in which the adhered cells gets attached to a slimy extracellular layer.They form this due to various factors including nutrional cues,exposure to planktonic cells and in presence of antibiotics.Planktonic cells are toxic to bacteria.
