In your studies of neurotransmitter release, you accidentally raise your neurons in a calcium-free medium. To nobody’s surprise, they do not release neurotransmitter. After switching the cells to a calcium-containing medium, they still do not release neurotransmitter when stimulated. After going through your notes, you see that your lab partner had ordered mutant cells. A) Explain what the mutation might have been, and B) how you would test that hypothesis (ie, what would you do to allow the cells to release neurotransmitter – assuming that the protein from A was the only defect).
