Natural selection tends to reduce genetic variation within a population by disfavouring particular alleles. However, in some situations selection can help maintain genetic variation rather than erode it. Explain how this can happen using an example.

Answer #1

Some forms of natural selection maintain genetic variation rather than eliminating it. Frequency-dependent selection is one of them. Large number of alleles are generated at a single locus. Multiallelic polymorphism is generated with wide range of allele-frequency distribution, therefore genotypic fitness. Negative frequency-dependent selection helps favoring rare genotypes and promoting genetic variation of the population.

Trypanosoma brucei, an African sleeping sickness parasite changes its surface antigens as the host develops antibodies. Most common antigens are targeted by the host antibodies. Frequency-dependent selection maintains genetic diversity of the parasite's antigens and its host's antibodies.

Which of the below statements is NOT a legitimate mechanism by which natural selection can maintain genetic variation in a population. Overdominance. When there is heterozygote advantage, as long as a population starts with two alleles (i.e., is not fixed for one or the other allele) both alleles will be maintained at a stable equilibrium. Fluctuating selection. Temporally or spatially varying selective regimes that favor different genotypes can preserve genetic variation. The maintenance of variation by this mechanism requires a...

The genetic basis for variation within a species was not understood at the time Darwin proposed his theory of evolution by natural selection. Based on what you have learned about Mendel’s laws of inheritance and population genetics, explain which factors are key for natural selection to have driven the difference in beak shape of the finches in the Galápagos Islands.

Which mechanism of evolutionary change is random? gene flow natural selection genetic drift sexual selection Which mechanism of evolutionary change results in a population that is better fit for current environmental conditions? sexual selection genetic drift gene flow natural selection Researchers studying polymorphic garter snakes to test whether predation patterns by birds helped to influence the snake’s color pattern. They created clay models of snakes (both striped and melanistic) and looked to see how many of the models were attacked...

11. Farmers use pesticides to kill unwanted weeds and pest insects in their crops. Using the following steps of natural selection, describe how an insect population can become pesticide-resistant. Natural selection (general process): 1 -- A population has genetic variation for traits 2 -- A new environmental pressure occurs 3 -- Individuals with adaptative traits survive and reproduce more than those without adaptive traits 4 -- The population has more adaptive traits (adaptive alleles) over time. Evolution has occured! Apply...

1.A population of alpacas all have an identical fur length phenotype. During a particularly cold winter, longer fur would be beneficial as it would provide them with greater insulation. You are discussing with some of your bio major friends who have not taken Genetics and your non-bio major friends about how characteristics such as blue eye, light skin pigmentation, and light hair color, derived from a mutation that occurred about 10,000 years ago in Europe. Your friends are not very happy that you used the word mutation to describe the origin of human characteristics associated with light pigmentation. At that moment you only recall that green eye, fair skin...

1A )Choose the false statement: A) Genes that are carried by current species will have no impact on the evolutionary pace or direction of future life; hence, regardless of what kinds of changes in biodiversity are brought on by climate change, the potential for new life forms remains infinite. B) A modern-day extinction, as is occurring today due to climate change, will probably result in a loss of biodiversity rather than a new explosion of diversity as occurred in the...
