Biomedical waste consists of any waste that is produced at the time of treatment, diagnosis or vaccination of humans or animals and in the research pertaining to it. Biomedical wastes are classified into four major types:

1. General,

2. Infectious,

3. Hazardous and

4. Radioactive.

Biomedical wastes are segregated into four types of coloured bags based on the wastes to be deposited into it as follows:
