Random mating is mating in which choice of partner is not influenced by genotype of partners.Random mating restore genetic equilibrium if no other evolutionary mechanism is occuring on population.To hold Hardy Weinberg equilibrium this is one of requirements.

Positive assortative mating is mating with similar genotype or similar phenotype while negative assortative mating is mating with dissimilar genotype or phenotype.these both assortative mating results in deviation from Hardy Weinberg equilibrium.

If geographical location of species is stable for many years it means it is in Hardy Weinberg equilibrium so preference will be random mating
