There are two pure breeding lines of plants that were crossed, one with yellow seeds and one with green seeds. The first filial (F1) produced all yellow seeds. When F1 is self-pollinated, they produced 43 green seeds and 57 yellow seeds. What can you tell me about the inheritance of the flower color?

Answer #1

Inheritance is the process by which genetic information is passed on from parent to child.

There are a few different ways that these alleles can interact to produce a phenotype for a gene. These are called inheritance patterns.

There are four types of inheritance that you are expected to understand:

  • Complete dominance
  • Incomplete dominance
  • Co-dominance
  • Sex-linked

In this case, as the two pure breeding lines of plants, one having green seeds and another having yellow seeds, crosses eachother producing only yellow seeds in F1 population, it indicates that yellow seed is completely dominated over green seed.

Yellow seed - dominant trait

Green seed- recessive trait

So it is the example of trait inheritance of seed colour having complete dominance.

The seeds from Mendel’s tall plants were round and yellow, all three characters due to a dominant gene at each of three independently assorting loci. The recessive genotypes dd, ww, and gg produce dwarf plants with wrinkled and green seeds, respectively., (a) If a pure, tall wrinkled and yellow variety is crossed with a pure dwarf, round, green variety, what phenotypic ratio is expected in the F1 and F2? A variety of pure-breeding snapdragons produces a tall plant with green seeds (WWSS). A second variety of pure-breeding snapdragons produce a short plant with white seeds (wwss). The two varieties are crossed, and the resulting seeds are collected. All of the seeds are green and when planted, they produce all tall plants (WwSs). These tall F1 plants are allowed to self-fertilize. The results for seeds and plant height in the F2 generations are as follows. What is the ?2 value,...
