Homework Answers

Answer #1

Answer) Enzymes are proteins that acts as biological catalyst. Enzymes catalyze biochemical reactions by

(a) Lowering the activation energy (minimum amount of energy required to activate molecules or atoms that can perform chemical reaction or transformation), in this process free energy does not get changed while there is lowering of the energy of transition state so that products can pass,

(b) Reaction catalyzed by binding of enzymes with reactant molecules known as substrate. The part where substrate attaches is known as active site, a general reaction could be substrate binds to active site and forms enzyme substrate complex, because of this product is developed and later, products leave the active site of an enzyme.

Minerals and vitamins are important nutritional molecules because they function as cofactors for critical enzymes in living systems. Without them, important biochemical reactions required for growth and tissue repair will not occur. Knowing this, explain the biochemical significance of folate and iron supplementation in pregnant women and women of reproductive age. Consider the effects of folate and iron deficiency in such contexts as well. [25 marks]
