Is the dependence of the sporophyte on the female gametophyte in ferns similar or different to the relationship between the sporophyte and the female gametophyte in bryophytes?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Ans - In bryophyta gametic phase dominates the life cycle and in ferns sporophyta dominates the life cycle.

In bryophyta sporophyte and gametophyte are physically connected. whereas in pteridophytes sporophyte and gametophyte are present on different plants and are not connected physically.

Sporophyte in bryophyta are dependent upon gametophyte for nutrition. on the other hand sporophytic plants in pteridophytes is independent and can perform photosyntheis.

How are the gametophytes of a pine tree different from a fern gametophyte? Gymnosperm gametophytes are microscopic and completely dependent on the sporophyte for nutrition. The gametophyte is always surrounded by sporophyte tissue. The fern gametophyte is a completely independent stage of the life cycle, though typically smaller than the sporophyte. Fern gametophytes produce spores, while gymnosperm gametophytes produce eggs and pollen. Gymnosperm gametophytes consist of the male and female cones, while the fern gametophyte is a physically separated structure...
