You might want to know if you have a mutation in another gene, ApoE4 that changes the amino cysteine to arginine, and affects age of onset of Alzheimer’s. How could changing the sequence result in a change in function?
A. It could change the amount of the protein produced.
B. It could change the protein’s 3-D shape and thus its ability to interact with other proteins.
C. It could change where the protein is located in the cell.
D. It could change the number of amino acids
and why?
Question:
Answer: B. It could change the protein’s 3-D shape and thus its ability to interact with other proteins.
ApoE are the gene family which is part of fat metabolism. Alzheimer's disease is related to accumulation of peptide beta-amyloid. ApoE4 increase the risk of this disease. Change in the cysteine to arginine at 112 position change the N-terminal and C-terminal interaction which result in the change in the shape of protein. This change reduces the peptide beta-amyloid cleavage efficiency of ApoE and resulted in accumulation of fat globules which increase risk of this disease.
