The origin of an unknown DNA for further analysis can be done firstly by sequencing the unknown DNA and then blasting the obtained sequence in NCBI database for any similar sequences. Then this similar sequences obtained can be depicted as a tree based on homologous sequences within the DNA. Thus we can determine the origin of an unknown DNA.

The identification of an unknown eukaryotic cell can be done by checking for the characteristic features exhibited by the cell. If the cells tend to form tissues that are of vertebrates then one can say that it is of vertebrate origin and if it forms tissues that are characteristic to invertebrates then it is of invertebrate origin. If the tissue being formed is not characteristic to any of them, then the DNA analysis can tell us whether it is vertebrate or invertebrate origin.
