Biomaterials are biological or synthetic substances that can be introduced into body tissues as a part of an implanted medical device or used to replace an organ, bodily functions etc.

The main requirement of a biomaterial is that it doesnot elicit an adverse reaction when placed into service.

A biomaterial should have the following functions:

  • Biocompatibility
  • Sterilizability
  • Bioinert
  • bio functionality

The kind of necessary properties of biomaterial includes:

  • Mechanical properties
  • Thermal properties
  • Optical properties
  • Electrical properties
  • Surface properties
