For a given population, the carrying capacity is equal to 100,000 individuals. Calculate the population growth rate as the net increase/decrease of individuals for a population of 110,000 individuals. Assume that  r max is equal to 1.0.

Answer #1

A poulation is given

Carrying capacity ,K is the maximum number of individuals of a species that an ecosystem can hold.

Here K = 100000 individuals

Population size = N = 110000 individuals

rmax is the intrinsic rate of population increase.

Here rmax   = 1

Population Growth rate = dN/dT

dN/dT = rmax N ( K-N/K )

dN/dT = 1 x 110000 x ( 100000 - 110000 /100000 )

= 110000 x ( - 10000 / 100000 )

= 110000 x - 0.1

= - 11000

Population growth rate is - 11000

It is a decrease of individuals.

Suppose we have a whale population that has been declines to 1000 individuals. The growth rate is 2% a year and the carrying capacity is 10,000. Calculate (use Excel) how many years are needed to have the population recover to 5,000 or more, meaning that during those years, no harvesting can take place. Once the population is recovered, how many whales can be harvested per year in a sustainable way?

how could i estimate the carrying capacity for a population using the jolly seber method? Some of the variables i have obtained include population estimate, dilution rate, apparent survival, finite rate of growth and intristic growth rate. I also have the jolly seber work book, so how can i estimate the carrying capacity from these parameters.

Population Growth Equation In the population growth equation, the letter “r” is defined as the per capita rate of increase, which is the difference between the per capita birth rate (the number of offspring produced per unit of time by an average member of the population) and per capita death rate (average number of deaths in the population per unit time). What does the value of “r” indicate about a population? All of the following characteristics are typical of a...

DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS PROBLEM Consider a population model that is a generalization of the exponential model for population growth (dy/dt = ky). In the new model, the constant growth rate k is replaced by a growth rate r(1 - y/K). Note that the growth rate decreases linearly as the population increases. We then obtain the logistic growth model for population growth given by dy/dt = r(1-y/K)y. Here K is the max sustainable size of the population and is called the carrying...
