Explain why electronegativity is fundamental to photosynthesis.
The measure of the tendancy to attract electrons is called Electronegativity. In all life on earth, the practical effects of Electronegativity can be seen by which the transfer of electrons between carbon (C) and oxygen(O) allows the storage and release of energy transmitted to earth from sun.
The process of photosynthesis changes complex molecules from a lower to higher potential energy ,ie, electrons are drawn away from O towards C. For this to happen, it requires higher potential energy because oxygen tends to attract the electrons more strongly than carbon due to the electronegetivities. Thus work must be done to effect this change and thereby form a carbohydrate.
