Mitochondria is the power house of the cell. Respiration takes place in mitochondria leading to production of ATP.
There are three phase of respiration: Glycolysis, Kreb cycle and oxidative phosphorylation. Two of these phases (kreb cyclec and oxidative phosphorylation) occur in mitochondria which are responsible for maximum ATP production. Glycolysis occur in cytoplasm which is responsible for production of only 2 ATP from one glucose molecule while rest 36 ATP are produced in mitochondria.
Hence, blocking mitochondria drastically affect ATP production.
