Posterior Mediastinum runs parallel with vertebral column. It is bordered anteriorly by pericardium, inferiorly by diaphragms thoracic side, superiorly to transverse thoracic plane, laterally to pleural sac and posteriorly to the bodies of thoracic vertebrae (T5 to T12). Posterior mediastinum contains the thoracic part of descending aorta, azygos vein, two hemiazygos veins, vagus nerve, splanchnic nerves, esophagus, thoracic duct and few lymph glands. Posterior mediastinum is the space through which structures between the thoracic and abdominal cavities passes.
