  • There are two types of bands : thick bands and thin bands
  • Thick bands are made up of multiple molecules of a proteins called myosin.
  • Thin bands are made up of multpile molecules of a protein called actin.
  • The thin actin bands are attached to Z - line or Z - disc of an elastic protein called titin.
  • Titin proteins also extends into the myofibril anchoring the other bands in position.
  • From each Z - line to the next is a unit called Sarcomere.
  • Sarcomere is the smallest contractile unit in the myofibril
  • Sarcomere contracts because the Z - line moves close together.
  • As the sarcomere contract the myofibrils contract.
