The oral route of administration is NOT be the best choice when:

Select one:

A. A patient is unconscious.

B. The patient has a strong gag reflex.

C. The medication needs to work rapidly.

D. All of the above

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The right choice is: D, all of the above

Explanation: Oral route of administration is not safe if patient is unconscious because the drug might enter the lungs and can cause aspiration pneumonia. If a patient has strong gag reflex then patient will expel the drug. Medications which need to act rapidly then it should not be given by oral route because drugs given by oral route takes longer time to go into systemic circulation and hence it takes time to show it's therapeutic action hence for rapid action of drugs it should be given by intravenous route. Therefore oral route is not the best choice in all the above cases.
