Barrett's Esophagus.

  • It is defined as type of premalignant condition in which the normal squamous lining of lower esophagus replaced by columnar epithelium.
  • This columnar epithelium show intestinal metaplasia with goblet cells.

1. Cause.

It is an Adaptive response of esophagus to recurrent gastroesophageal reflux.

2. Incidence of malignancy.

  • It is 40 times more prone to carcinoma.
  • This metaplasia change to dysplasia and end form Adenocarcinoma.

3. Treatment for prevention gastric content reaching esophagus.

  • High dose of Proton pump inhibitor like Pantaprazole ,Lansoprazole etc.
  • Use of antacid .
  • Use of H2 blockers like rantidine.
  • Prevent reflux by Prokinetic drugs like Metaclopromide , Cisapride etc.
