Amphetamines are adrenergic agonists that at one time were prescribed for weight loss, but were eventually pulled from the market because of dangerous side effects. Why would they be prescribed for weight loss? What might be some of the dangerous side effects?
Amphetamines are indirect acting adrenergic agonists.
Amphetamine decreases appetite and food intake by inhibiting the centre of hunger in brain (hypothalamus) there by providing feeling of satiety (fullness) and hence it was used for weight reduction in obese patients. But on long term use i.e chronic use amphetamine was causing serious side effects like myocardial infarction, stroke, drug addiction and due to this it was withdrawn from the market.
