Answer #1

a) Free nerve endings are found in the dermis around the base of hair follicles and close to the surface of the skin (epidermis) where the hair emerges from the skin. They are also found in the joints

Free nerve endings resemble the fine roots of a plant. They penetrate the dermis and end in the stratum granulosum.

b) Sensation perceived by free nerve endings include temperature and pain.

They use thermoreceptors to transduce temperature and nociceptors to transduce pain. Most nociceptors respond to heat and cold, mechanical stimuli, and chemicals associated with tissue damage or disease.
