The family history of cancer is very important in case of cancers. There are certain genes which are mutated which are heritable. Therefore, those will cause cancer in the family members of the patient and subsequently, the patient may also has cancer. If there is no family history, there is less risk of cancer in the patient. If there is positive family history, then the patient would be at great risk of cancer. It affects the treatment protocol as well.
As in the case of breast carcinoma, about 15-20% of women with Breast carcinoma have an affected first degree relative (mother, sister or daughter), but don't carry an identified breast cancer gene mutation. This increased risk is probably due to the interaction of low risk susceptibility genes and shared environmental factors.
