What is the clinical significance of these circumflex arteries that supply the head of the femur?
There are two Circumflex arteries namely lateral and medial circumflex arteries,it arises from the deep femoral artery and supplies the area of neck of femur and head of femur.It forms anastomosis around the neck of femur.
Clinical significance:
Any fracture occurs in the neck of femur leads to damage to circumflex arteries leads to avascular necrosis occurs in the head of femur and neck of the femur.
Avascular means no blood supply, necrosis means damage to the bone tissue and it both cause the femoral head and neck get necrosis.
circumflex arteries also used in the vascular graft.mainly done in the coronary artery bypass surgery.
