A patient was in a car accident and needs a blood transfusion. The patient is type AB-. Doctors also found that the patients blood tested positive for anti-Rh. Select ALL blood types this patient could safely receive in the transfusion
As the patient is AB-. He doesn't have D antigen and has anti-D antibodies. So, if blood which has D antigen is transfused into the patient, the anti-D antibodies will hemolyse the red blood cells. Therefore, there is no advantage and patient's condition will get more deteriorated. Therefore, only blood groups which are negative for Rh can be transfuses.
And also AB blood group patients are called universal recipients because they don't contain any antibodies against A and B antigens, therefore they will not hemolyse the transfused RBCs. They can get blood from all blood groups.
Keeping in mind the factors about D antigen and AB blood group, the blood groups which can be transfused are A-, B-, AB- and O-.
