The anterior thoracic wall and sternum is drained by which veins?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The venous drainage of the anterior thoracic wall and sternum is by Anterior intercostal veins. The upper six anterior intercostal veins drain directly to internal Thoracic vein. The seventh, eight & ninth anterior intercostal veins will drain into the musculophrenic vein.

• The anterior intercostal veins originate from the intercostal space just inferior to anterior aspects of their respective ribs.

• The anterior intercostal veins are present only in the upper nine spaces. Each space contains two veins and accompanies the anterior intercostal arteries.

In Drosophila, loss-of-function Ultrabithorax mutations result in the posterior thoracic segments differentiating into body parts with an identity normally found in the anterior thoracic segments. When the Ultrabithorax gene was cloned, it was shown to encode a transcription factor and to be expressed only in the posterior region of the thorax. Thus, Ultrabithorax acts to specify the identity of the posterior thoracic segments. Similar genes were soon discovered in other animals, including mice and men. You have found that mice...
