In pneumonia, fluid collects in the alveoli. What conclusions can you draw regarding the effect on vital capacity and gas exchange?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

ANSWER: There is a sudden fall in the vital capacity in the patients of pneumonia as the alveoli is filled with pus and fluid which makes it difficult for the diffusion of gases in the alveoli. Hence there is a fall in the vital capacity. But in convalescent stage there will be increase in the votal capacity indicating it is returning to normal.

Gaseous exchanges at the level of alveoli in patients of pneumonia is difficult as the alveoli is filled with pus and fluid.
