Circumvallate papillae are located at the base of your tongue. They're large and round, and they house several thousand taste buds.The circumvallate papillae are located in the posterior third of the tongue in the shape of a V.  Most adults have only seven to 12 of these papillae in their mouths,  the taste buds on different parts of the tongue are thought to respond to certain foods such as sweet, savory and bitter,the circumvallate papillae were shown to identify bitter. They are also sensitive to sour taste.
