what is happening physiologically when a person stands up too quickly and gets light headed?

Answer #1

When a person stand up too quickly, gravity causes the blood to pool in the legs and abdomen. This decreases the blood pressure as there is less blood circulating to the heart. As a result of less resturn, the heart cannot pump blood to the highest point of the body, which are the head and the brain. Reduced blood flow to the brain causes light headedness.

This condition of low blood pressure is sensed by the baroreceptors near the heart and neck arteries. These baroreceptors send signals to the brain, which causes the heart to beat faster. This results in rise in blood pressure.
