what is the genotype (genetic combination of alleles) of a woman who is a carrier of the disease (Heterozygous)?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Carriers are the person , who donot exhibit the disease but carries or passes on the disease to next generation. Mostly their genotype is hetrozygous . For a female carrier thier genotype would be [X(H) X(h)]. Where H is the normal functioning gene and h is the gene responsible for disease manifestation.

Normally for carrier females there will not be any disease manifestations , if they marry males with normal genotype [X(H)Y], in the offsprings 50% females are carriers and 50 % male have disease manifestations.

If the carrier female marries affected male [X(h)Y] , 50% females are carriers other 50% females have disease manifestations. 50 % males have disease manifestations and 50% are normal .

A woman and man have approached you for genetic counseling and are concerned about a hereditary form of deafness in their family. Both have normal hearing and there are no children. The woman's father has autosomal dominant sensory-neural deafness. Assume he is heterozygous. This hearing impairment displays onset at about age 10, and penetrance appears to be about 70%.
