What is the most common direction the nucleus pulposus will move if an intervertebral disc herniates?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The most common direction in which the nucleus pulposus herniates is posterolateral.

  1. The intervertebral disc is fibrocartilage.
  2. It acts as a cushion between the bodies of the vertebrae( superior and inferior )
  3. The intervertebral disc consists of two parts:
    1. Annulus fibrous - this part of the intervertebral disc consist of dense cartilaginous fibrous rings
    2. Nucleus pulposus - This forms the center of the intervertebral disc. This part is jelly-like
  4. The intervertebral disc is supported anteriorly and posteriorly by an anterior and posterior longitudinal ligament.
  5. The annulus fibrosus is thinner posterolaterally.
  6. Therefore, nucleus pulposus herniates ( commonly ) posterolaterally.

A uranium-238 nucleus at rest undergoes radioactive decay, splitting into an alpha particle (helium nucleus) with mass 6.64×10-27 kg and a thorium nucleus with mass 3.89×10-25 kg. The measured kinetic energy of the alpha particle is 4.01×10-13 J. If after the decay, the alpha particle is observed to move in the positive x direction. A radioactive nucleus at rest decays into a second nucleus, an electron, and a neutrino. The electron and neutrino are emitted at right angles and have momenta of 9.10×10−23 kg⋅m/s and , 6.25×10−23 kg⋅m/s respectively. a) Determine the magnitude of the momentum of the second (recoiling) nucleus. b) Determine the direction of the momentum of the second (recoiling) nucleus. Assume that the neutrino and the electron move along −x and −y axes respectively.
