A student doing a placement in emergency was discussing the
management of a woman who presented with a fractured right radius.
The student was asked what investigation would be required and she
said “we need an x-ray of her right arm.” The attending physician
said that would not help. Why?
Explain in anatomy and physiological terms also what would be your approach of this case.
ANSWER: X ray of arm region of the upperlimb would not reveal any fracture site in the radius. As arm is the upper part of the upperlimb in which there is only one bone named humerus. So Xray of forearm AP view is required to locate the frature site. Also Xray forearm lateral view and oblique view can be the investigation procedure for this patient. Even if the wrist is uninjured it must also be included in the X ray to find if there is any normal anatomical variations before surgery.
