The stomach is an important organ in digestion which is responsible for the chemical digestion of food after the partially chewed food mixed with saliva (bolus) reaches the stomach via the esophagus.

Its anatomy is as follows -

The stomach as be divided into four regions, namely,

  • Cardia: Also called the cardiac region, it is here that the esophagus joins the stomach.
  • Fundus: This dome-shaped region is the site where undigested food, along with gases, is stored before their chemical digestion.
  • Body: Chemical digestion takes place here.
  • Pylorus: This funnel-shaped region joins the duodenum, connecting the stomach to the small intestine.
