1) stabilization of the heart in the thoracic cavity - The structure of Pericardium by ligamentous attachments helps in this function

2) Protection of heart from mechanical shock and infection - pericardium is composed of three layer and it has pericardial fluid which helps in this function

3) prevent excessive dilation of heart : Due to presence of pericardium has outer covering and made up of collagen and elastin fibers helps in this function

4) Acts as lubricant and reduces friction - It is due to presence of pericardial fluid
