What neurological mechanisms are responsible for generation of force in a muscle? (Recruitment and Rate coding)
ANSWER :
The nervous system uses following two different mechanisms to control the force generation during the muscle contraction; spatial motor recruitment and rate coding (or temporal motor recruitment).
During the spatial motor recruitment, the more number of motor units are activated to produce a larger force, while temporal recruitment or rate coding controls the muscular force via dealing with frequency of activation in muscle fibres contraction, and the consecutive stimulation of motor muscle fibres will twitch the muscle more frequently to contract, that results in the greater muscular force.
