Explain negative feedback and be able to identify how negative feedback influences energy production. What are the major molecules involved in negative feedback during energy production?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Negative feedback loop: The end product of a biochemical pathway inhibits one of the initial steps of the respective pathway. It ensures that a given metabolite is not accumulated beyond the required level.

Negative feedback loop plays a significant role in energy metabolism.

Aerobic respiration is concerned with the generation of ATP.
Several enzymes in aerobic respiration are subjected to negative feedback loop.
1. Phosphofructokinase and Pyruvate kinase are inhibited by excess levels of ATP
2. Pyruvate dehydrogenase is inhibited by excess levels of NADH
3. Citrate synthase is inhibited by ATP, NADH, and Succinyl CoA
4. Isocitrate dehydrogenase is inhibited by ATP and NADH.
5. Alpha-Ketoglutarate dehydrogenase is inhibited by succinyl CoA and NADH
