Asthma is an obstructive lung disease, characterized by bronchoconstriction. Asthmatics often have a higher residual volume than normal. Why might this be so?
Asthma is a chronic disorder in humans due to the remodeling as well as the construction of the the respiratory tract in our human body
The residual volume will increase in asthmatic patient and the main reason is due to the construction of the respiratory tract. That is the amount of air that can be expired in the humans with constructed bronhus is less . Even if the inspiration phase is increasing in asthma it can help in the maintainance of the inspired air, but the expired air cannot be maintained as the expiration phase cannot be elongated any more . And this less to the retention and reduced excretion of air out of body due to less space for the air to move out of the respiratory system. So this bronchoconstriction will read to retention of air and thereby increasing the residual volume of air
