1. Describe the role played by antidiuretic hormone (ADH) in returning the body to a normal level of hydration following an episode of dehydration. Include in your answer descriptions of:  

a) the stimulus for, and mechanisms of ADH release

b) the effect ADH has on the cells of the renal tubules

  • ADH ( antidiuretic hormone ) is released when there is increase in plasma osmolarity .
  • It reabsorb water from the renal tubule into blood capillaries.
  • This hormone is synthesized in hypothalamus and stored in posterior pituitary . Osmoreceptor will detect the plasma concentration , and if it is highly concentrated posterior pituitary releases ADH.
  • ADH causes insertion of aquaporin on cell membrane of renal tubule cells,which leads to increased water permeability.And large amount of water is reabsorbed into blood from renal tubule cell.
  • When the osmolarity become normal , these aquaporins are removed and release of ADH is deceased.
  • In this way ADH play an important role in water conservation.
