1. What evidence suggests that schizophrenia involves abnormalities in the dopaminergic system? How might these abnormalities manifest as characteristics of schizophrenia? (750 words limit)
Schizophrenia is hypothesized to interfere with neurotransmission in subcortical and limbic brain regions via hyperactivity of dopamine D2 receptor responsible for symptoms of schizophrenia and the negative symtoms are attributed to hypofunctionality of dopamine D1 receptor in the prefrontal cortex. Post mortem studies of schizophrenia patient revealed the presence of elevated number of dopamine D2 receptor along with upregulation of the same is observed in caudate nucleus of patients attributed to poorer performance in cognitive tasks involving corticostriatal pathways. It correlated with the characterizations of schizophrenia like disorganised speech, improper behaviour and less participation in daily routine.
