Explain the consequences to the chemistry of the ECF and cell function if this gas exchange does not occur normally.
Gas exchange is an important function of lungs and gas exchange is needed for proper functioning of cells. Cells need oxygen for their functioning and excrete carbondioxide which is the waste product of cell function. From the lungs the oxygen is transfered to cells through blood and extracellular fluids. If there is any alteration occur in the gas exchange it will affect the functions off cell.
The oxygen and carbondioxide are get into cells from the blood through the extracellular fluid by diffusion. So alteration in the gas exchange will cause deficency of oxygen in cells and excess concentration of carbondioxide in the cells. It will lead to seizure, loss of conciousness, fatigue etc. Pulmonary edema is the condition which fluid collected in the lung or alveolar cells which is a life threatening condition.
