Explain how blood flow to a capillary in the gastrointestinal tract can be REDUCED and INCREASED.
The gastrointestinal blood flow and oxygenation are usually maintained by vasoregulatory mechanisms operating at tissue level.Generally, blood flow through the capillary beds is regulated depending on the body's needs and is directed by nerve and hormone signals. Usually, after a large meal, most of the blood is diverted to the stomach by vasodilation of vessels of the digestive system and vasoconstriction of other vessels.
Eg. Sympathetic nerve stimulation causes decreased blood flow to stomach and intestine by vasoconstriction of their respective arteries.
Hope this helps you. Thank you ?
